INSIDE THE $3 MILLION LOUVRE HEIST | REAL CRIME

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary delves into the audacious 1911 heist of a prized masterpiece from the Louvre, presenting a compelling narrative rooted in "real crime." The film meticulously reconstructs the baffling two-year manhunt that ensued, highlighting the police's inability to identify the culprit. It uncovers the surprising identity of the thief as Vincenzo Perujia, an Italian immigrant who concealed the stolen artwork for an astonishing 800 days. The documentary expertly explores the complex motivations behind the crime, weaving together threads of Italian patriotism, immigrant resentment, and even the insidious effects of lead poisoning. It offers a poignant look at the personal stakes, including the heartbreaking discovery of the plot by Perujia's daughter, and critiques the authorities' narrow focus, which blinded them to the possibility that a "humble workman" could orchestrate such an elaborate theft. This is a fascinating exploration of a pivotal moment in art history.
