IN THE SHADOW OF SURIBACHI

Cinemavixion Review

Joseph Conforti's "In the Shadow of Suribachi" (2017) is a poignant documentary that delves into the harrowing experiences of Sammy Bernstein, a Jewish-American Marine who endured the brutal 36-day siege of Iwo Jima. Beyond the battlefield, the film compellingly explores Bernstein's struggle with antisemitism within the U.S. Marine Corps, highlighting the dual battles he fought – one against the enemy, the other against prejudice. This intimate portrayal underscores the profound emotional toll of war and the enduring strength of identity in the face of adversity. It's a vital piece of historical storytelling that sheds light on an often-overlooked aspect of the WWII experience.
