I DREAM OF JEANIE

Cinemavixion Review

Allan Dwan's "I Dream of Jeanie" offers a gentle, if somewhat sanitized, glimpse into the life of Stephen Foster, the celebrated composer behind timeless American melodies. The film navigates Foster's journey from obscurity to recognition, highlighting the crucial role of Edwin P. Christy in shaping his career. Bill Shirley embodies Foster with a sensitive portrayal, while Muriel Lawrence and Ray Middleton provide solid support. Though it may not delve into the deepest complexities of Foster's personal struggles, the movie succeeds in capturing the spirit of an era and the enduring power of his music. It's a pleasant biographical piece, particularly resonant for those interested in the history of American popular song and the challenges faced by artists in the 19th century.
