HOW TO RUIN THE HOLIDAYS

Cinemavixion Review

Arlen Konopaki's "How to Ruin the Holidays" offers a poignant, albeit uneven, exploration of family dynamics during the festive season. The film centers on Michelle, a comedian whose professional struggles are mirrored by her fractured home life. Lured back for the holidays under the guise of an emergency by her sister Andrea, Michelle finds herself navigating the eccentricities of her doomsday-prepping father and free-spirited brother, Mark. The narrative gains significant emotional weight as Michelle confronts the unconventional lifestyle of her father and is faced with a profound, life-changing decision regarding the care of her brother with disabilities. While the local data mentions Colin Mochrie, the external data lists Caroline Aaron, Freddy Boyd, and Ricky Boynton, suggesting a potential discrepancy in cast information that doesn't undermine the central plot. The film, released in 2023, garnered a mixed reception, with Rotten Tomatoes noting a 50% score, indicating a divided audience. Despite its flaws, "How to Ruin the Holidays" is a commendable effort to blend humor with heartfelt drama, encouraging viewers to reconsider the complexities of familial bonds and the true meaning of care during the holidays.
