The 1950s, a decade often remembered for its post-war optimism and burgeoning consumer culture, is brought vividly to life in "The House The 50's Built." This documentary delves into the profound impact of the crude oil revolution on everyday British households. Engineer Brendan Walker guides us through the era's transformative petrochemical industry, highlighting how the distillation of crude oil fueled an explosion of innovation. The resulting advancements in materials, particularly in paints, led to a radical shift in interior design, injecting vibrant color and modern aesthetics into homes that had long been defined by austerity. Beyond mere decoration, the film explores the integration of new technologies that propelled the domestic sphere into a future previously unimaginable. It's a fascinating look at how a single resource reshaped not just design, but the very fabric of daily life, ushering in an age of convenience and modernity.
