HOLLYWOOD: THE GREAT STARS

Cinemavixion Review

Marshall Flaum's "Hollywood: The Great Stars" offers a fascinating retrospective on the rise and fall of the Hollywood star system. Narrated by the ever-reliable Henry Fonda, the documentary meticulously traces the evolution of cinematic stardom from the silent era's pioneers like Mary Pickford to its twilight in the early 1960s. Flaum skillfully guides the audience through the machinery of fame, exploring how studios manufactured idols and how the public's relationship with these larger-than-life figures changed over decades. While the film may not delve into the deepest controversies of the era, it provides a compelling and accessible overview, making it a valuable watch for cinephiles and students of Hollywood history alike. The inclusion of Walter Abel and June Allyson in the archival footage or narration adds a touch of authentic Golden Age presence to this historical journey.
