Joseph Kane's 1937 Western, "Gunsmoke Ranch," plunges viewers into the heart of the Great Depression, where a nefarious con man, Phineas Flagg, preys on displaced flood victims. He cunningly buys up Arizona's Gunsmoke Valley at a pittance, only to resell plots to desperate families at an exorbitant price, omitting the crucial detail that the land is slated for eminent domain and a new dam. The Three Mesquiteers, portrayed by Robert Livingston, Ray Corrigan, and Max Terhune, emerge as the town's only hope. Initially dismissed, their warnings about Flagg's duplicity gain traction, especially as Stony (Livingston) woos the granddaughter of the settlers' leader, Judge Warren. This B-movie offers a classic tale of underdogs fighting against corrupt forces, set against a backdrop of hardship and the enduring spirit of the American West. While not a cinematic masterpiece, "Gunsmoke Ranch" delivers a satisfying narrative of justice prevailing, bolstered by the reliable charm of its lead trio.
