This 1941 film, directed by Jack Irwin, plunges into the murky depths of maritime intrigue with 'Gun Cargo.' The narrative centers on Captain Jim Parker, a man newly minted with his captain's papers, who is thrust into command of the merchant ship Black Rover. Unbeknownst to him, the Winthrop Shipping Line, under the dubious stewardship of Fred Winthrop, is orchestrating an illegal arms smuggling operation. Parker's troubles are compounded by the presence of Fred Winthrop, the owner's son and now first mate, who assembles a crew composed largely of criminal elements, ensuring a lack of oversight and a challenge to Parker's authority. Adding a layer of personal drama, Parker's fiancée, Helen, embarks on the perilous voyage disguised as a galley boy, assisted by the ship's cook, Gimpy. The voyage to Santino, with a stop at Sea Turtle Island, quickly sours as Parker grows suspicious of his disaffected crew. Helen's disguise is soon discovered, and Parker orders her to disembark, but she clandestinly returns, finding refuge in the cargo hold. The tension escalates when Parker uncovers the illicit cargo of guns, and his attempt to alter course is met with mutiny led by Fred, who incapacitates Parker and seizes control. A violent storm further destabilizes the situation, leading to a drunken revelry among the crew and an assault on Helen. Hearing her cries, Parker breaks free, aiding Helen before being knocked unconscious again. He awakens adrift, with amnesia, eventually washing ashore on an island where he finds solace and companionship with an old sailor named Peg. Their days are spent in a haze of drink, planning to purchase a boat with hoarded pearls. A chance encounter in a local café with members of the Black Rover's crew, and Fred himself attempting to fence the remaining weapons, ignites a brawl. During the fight, Fred is shot, and Parker, struck on the head, regains his memory. The story culminates in a maritime inquiry where Parker's testimony, corroborated only by Helen's fragmented account, is insufficient. However, the plot unravels when Winthrop confesses, taking responsibility for the lost ship and crew, and even offering Fred control of his empire. 'Gun Cargo' is a tale of betrayal, lost identity, and the eventual, albeit chaotic, triumph of truth.
