GOTLAND: VISBY’S LAST STAND | MEDIEVAL DEAD | TIMELINE

Cinemavixion Review

In the compelling documentary "Gotland: Visby’s Last Stand," part of the "Medieval Dead" series, Timeline delves into a brutal chapter of Swedish history. The episode meticulously reconstructs the devastating events of 1361, when King Valdemar’s Danish forces laid siege to the wealthy town of Visby. It poignantly contrasts the inaction of the merchants with the valiant, yet ultimately tragic, stand of a hastily assembled peasant militia. The narrative is brought to life through the expertise of battle analyst Tim Sutherland and archaeologist Malin Holst, who explore the discovery of mass graves containing over 1185 bodies. The program investigates the chilling details of the slaughter and the fascinating archaeological finds, including bodies buried in armor, and seeks to uncover the legendary 'Fourth Grave Pit'. This episode offers a visceral glimpse into the harsh realities of medieval warfare and the enduring legacy of Visby's fallen.
