Eugène Lourié's 1961 film 'Gorgo' presents a classic creature feature premise with a unique Irish twist. The narrative follows a group of opportunistic sailors who capture a gargantuan sea monster off the coast of Ireland, only to find their lucrative prize has a rather large, and very angry, mother. The film taps into the anxieties of the era, exploring themes of exploitation and the consequences of disturbing the natural order. While the visual effects are characteristic of its time, the sheer scale of the titular monster and the ensuing chaos in London offer a thrilling spectacle. Bill Travers and William Sylvester anchor the human element, their characters grappling with greed and fear as their discovery unleashes unprecedented destruction. 'Gorgo' remains a memorable entry in the giant monster genre, delivering kaiju mayhem with a surprisingly effective dose of environmental commentary.
