Cinemavixion Review

In "Gibby," director Phil Gorn delivers a heartwarming, albeit predictable, tale of healing and friendship centered around a young girl and her simian companion. The film stars Crystal the Monkey as the titular capuchin, whose infectious energy proves to be the catalyst for change in the life of Katie (played by Shelby Lyon, though Peyton Meyer is also listed in the cast). Following a personal tragedy, Katie finds herself adrift, disconnected from school, friends, and her passion for gymnastics. Her world begins to brighten, however, when she agrees to look after Gibby, a monkey belonging to her science teacher. The narrative unfolds as Gibby's cheerful disposition helps Katie rediscover her zest for life, mend fractured friendships, and even navigate the competitive landscape of gymnastics, confronting a school rival in the process. While the plot treads familiar ground, the genuine charm of Crystal the Monkey and the earnest performances, particularly from the young cast including Ysa Penarejo and Vivica A. Fox, lend the film a certain appeal. "Gibby" offers a light-hearted, family-friendly exploration of grief, resilience, and the unexpected bonds that can help us find our way back to joy.
