Sam Newfield's "Fugitive of the Plains" plunges audiences back into the rugged world of the West, starring the iconic Buster Crabbe as the ever-beleaguered Billy the Kid. Released in 1943, this installment of the popular serials sees Billy once again fighting to clear his name, this time by infiltrating an outlaw gang led by the formidable Kate Shelly. The narrative cleverly positions Billy to expose a double-crosser while simultaneously navigating his own precarious reputation. Crabbe, a veteran of numerous Westerns and a beloved Flash Gordon, brings his characteristic charm and athleticism to the role. He is ably supported by Al St. John, whose "Fuzzy" character provides much-needed comic relief and a grounding presence. Director Sam Newfield, a prolific craftsman of B-movies, expertly balances action sequences with the unfolding mystery, ensuring a brisk pace throughout the film's 56-minute runtime.
