FROM HERO TO PRISONER: THE ERNIE PAERATA STORY

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary, 'From Hero to Prisoner: The Ernie Paerata Story,' offers a profound look into a life irrevocably altered by circumstance and personal struggle. It chronicles the journey of Ernie Paerata, a man who transitioned from a position of respect as a soldier and prison officer, and also a poet, into the harsh realities of incarceration. The narrative centers on his arrest in 1991 at Bangkok Airport, caught with heroin, leading to a severe sentence of thirty years in Klong Prem prison, notoriously known as the "Bangkok Hilton." The film delves into the harrowing experience of survival within one of the world's most formidable penal institutions. Despite the bleakness of his situation, the documentary highlights Paerata's enduring resilience, the unexpected expression of his humanity through poetry, and the strength of the human spirit that persisted against overwhelming odds. It is a compelling exploration of how a life can take a drastic turn and the capacity for inner fortitude in the face of extreme adversity.
