FREE STATE

Cinemavixion Review

"Free State" is a deeply affecting drama that sensitively navigates the complexities of love and identity against the oppressive backdrop of apartheid-era South Africa. Directed by Salmon de Jager, the film centers on Jeanette, a young woman whose return to her homeland forces her to confront not only her burgeoning feelings for Ravi, an Indian man, but also the deeply entrenched racial segregation of the time. The narrative, enriched by performances from Nicola Breytenbach and Andrew Govender, with a notable appearance by Leleti Khumalo, probes the societal constraints and personal sacrifices demanded by a prejudiced system. While the external data indicates a 2016 release and a runtime of 98 minutes, the core of the film lies in its poignant exploration of forbidden romance and the courage it takes to defy societal norms. "Free State" offers a compelling, albeit fictionalized, glimpse into a turbulent period of history, making it a worthy watch for those interested in character-driven stories that grapple with significant social issues.
