FACING THE STORM: STORY OF THE AMERICAN BISON

Cinemavixion Review

"Facing the Storm: Story of the American Bison" is a compelling documentary that delves into the complex and often fraught relationship between humanity and one of North America's most iconic creatures. The film masterfully chronicles the precipitous decline of the American bison in the 19th century, driven by commercial hunting and a deliberate campaign for their eradication, reducing their numbers from an estimated 30 million to a mere 23 by 1885. Beyond recounting this harrowing near-extinction, the documentary illuminates the vital spiritual and cultural connection between the Plains Indians and the bison, presenting the animal as a symbol of the wild American spirit. Furthermore, it offers a hopeful perspective, exploring the visionary efforts and considerable challenges involved in restoring bison populations and their habitats across the Great Plains. This film serves not only as a poignant historical account but also as a thoughtful exploration of conservation and the potential for the bison to signify a path towards a more sustainable future.
