ESCANABA IN DA MOONLIGHT

Cinemavixion Review

Jeff Daniels' directorial debut, "Escanaba in da Moonlight," offers a charmingly idiosyncratic look at the annual deer-hunting ritual in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The narrative centers on the universally relatable curse of the "buckless yooper," embodied by a man burdened by his inability to bag a deer, much to the chagrin of his competitive family. Daniels, who also penned the screenplay, infuses the story with a genuine sense of place and a dry, often absurd, humor that will resonate with those familiar with the traditions of the hunt. While the plot may not delve into profound depths, its strength lies in its authentic portrayal of familial dynamics and the specific cultural milieu. The performances, particularly from Daniels himself, anchor the film with a blend of frustration and affection. It's a warm, often funny, exploration of a unique American tradition, inviting audiences into the heart of deer camp with open arms.
