ENEMY WITHIN - THE UNFORGETTABLE TRUE STORY OF A JAPANESE PILOT LOST AFTER PEARL HARBOR

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary plunges into a fascinating, little-known incident following the attack on Pearl Harbor. It recounts the story of Shigenori Nishikaichi, an Imperial Japanese Navy pilot whose Zero fighter crash-lands on Niʻihau, a remote Hawaiian island inhabited by a community largely of native Hawaiian descent. Unaware of the war's outbreak, the islanders initially extend traditional hospitality. However, the discovery of Nishikaichi's true identity as an enemy combatant sparks a tense cultural and moral dilemma. The narrative explores the challenging choice faced by the locals between their deeply ingrained values of hospitality and their emerging allegiance to the United States, all set against the dramatic backdrop of a world at war. The film highlights a unique clash of cultures and loyalties, offering a poignant look at a pivotal moment in history through the eyes of those on the periphery.
