DISPATCHES FROM CLEVELAND

Cinemavixion Review

Catherine Gund's "Dispatches from Cleveland" offers a poignant and vital look into the lives of ordinary citizens grappling with systemic issues in one of America's most historically divided cities. Across its five chapters, the documentary masterfully weaves together narratives of police misconduct, social discrimination, and entrenched poverty, demonstrating the resilience and profound love residents hold for their hometown. This love, Gund illustrates, is the driving force behind their collective efforts to foster meaningful change. Featuring compelling perspectives from figures like Samaria Rice, Mansfield Frazier, and Jawanza Colvin, the film is a powerful testament to community activism and the enduring pursuit of justice. Its unflinching portrayal of intersectional movements makes it a significant contribution to the documentary landscape, encouraging viewers to confront uncomfortable truths and recognize the power of grassroots organizing.
