DER BIBERPELZ
Cinemavixion Review
Gerhart Hauptmann's "Der Biberpelz" is a sharp, satirical look at the societal hypocrisies and the often-ineffectual nature of authority in late 19th-century Germany. Set "somewhere around Berlin" during the Septennat struggle, the play centers on Mutter Wolffen, a washerwoman who, despite her outward claims of righteousness, harbors a decidedly opportunistic streak. The plot unfolds as she and her daughters become entangled in a series of petty thefts, culminating in the pilfering of a valuable beaver coat from the wealthy Herr Krüger. Mutter Wolffen's cunning and resourcefulness are contrasted with the bumbling incompetence of the local authorities, particularly Amtsvorsteher von Wehrhahn, who is more interested in pursuing political dissidents than solving actual crimes. The play masterfully uses the Berlin dialect and a grotesque, farcical trial scene to expose the absurdity and corruption lurking beneath the veneer of Wilhelminian order. "Der Biberpelz" remains a potent commentary on social climbing, moral ambiguity, and the flawed systems of justice, delivered with a biting wit that still resonates today.
