Giulio Petroni's 'Death Rides a Horse' is a stylish and compelling Spaghetti Western that transcends the genre's typical revenge tropes. Lee Van Cleef, in a role that perfectly suits his weathered gravitas, plays Ryan, an aging gunslinger seeking his own form of retribution. He crosses paths with a young, determined bounty hunter, Bill Meceita (John Phillip Law), who is driven by the brutal murder of his family. Their uneasy alliance forms the core of a narrative that masterfully blends classic Western elements with a darker, more introspective exploration of vengeance. The film's pacing is deliberate, allowing the arid landscapes and tense standoffs to breathe, while the score adds an essential layer of atmosphere. Despite a mixed reception in some quarters, the performances are strong, and the plot's twists, particularly the startling finale, offer a satisfying, albeit somber, conclusion to this tale of obsession and justice.
