DATSCHE

Cinemavixion Review

Lara Hewitt's "Datsche" is a charming and insightful comedy-drama that beautifully explores themes of belonging, cultural exchange, and unexpected connections. Set in a tranquil German garden colony, the film centers on Valentin Hermann, a New York actor grappling with his roots after inheriting his grandfather's summer cottage, or 'datsche'. His quiet retreat is disrupted by the presence of Adam, an Ethiopian man seeking refuge from deportation. The narrative skillfully navigates the delicate balance between Valentin's adjustment to the eccentricities of his new neighbors and the secrecy surrounding Adam's situation. Hewitt, who also penned the screenplay, crafts a narrative that is both humorous and poignant, highlighting the universal desire for home and the strength found in shared humanity. Despite its modest independent production, "Datsche" offers a resonant message, proving that more unites us than divides us. The film, which garnered a nomination, is a testament to the power of empathy and community, making it a heartwarming watch for anyone who has ever yearned for or found their own sense of belonging.
