CUSTER OF THE WEST

Cinemavixion Review

Robert Siodmak's "Custer of the West" presents a sweeping, if somewhat romanticized, portrait of the infamous General George Armstrong Custer, brought to life by a commanding performance from Robert Shaw. Released in 1967, this epic Western delves into Custer's post-Civil War career, charting his rise as a celebrated military figure and his eventual, tragic command of the 7th Cavalry at the Battle of Little Bighorn. The film captures the ambition and pride that defined Custer, exploring how these traits ultimately led to disaster against Crazy Horse's warriors. Despite a mixed critical reception, as indicated by its Rotten Tomatoes score, the film offers a compelling, large-scale narrative for fans of historical dramas and classic Westerns, exploring themes of glory, hubris, and the clash of cultures on the American frontier.
