CROMWELL’S SKULL: THE BIZARRE FATE OF A TRAITOR AND HERO

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary delves into the truly bizarre and often overlooked journey of Oliver Cromwell's skull, a relic whose fate proved as tumultuous as the man himself. Following his death and subsequent posthumous desecration upon the Restoration, Cromwell's head embarked on a centuries-long odyssey. It transformed from a potent symbol of treason and rebellion into a clandestine prize, a morbid spectacle in an 18th-century peep show, and an object of both reverence and derision. The film masterfully weaves together historical investigation, expert commentary from notable historians and authors, and compelling storytelling to trace this severed relic's path. It serves as a powerful, albeit macabre, lens through which to examine Britain's evolving relationship with monarchy, democracy, and the enduring echoes of power and conflict. The narrative reminds us that even the most definitively buried past can continue to shape the present.
