CONFESSIONS BEHIND BARS: THE LAZARUS MAZINGANE STORY

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary offers a rare and unflinching look into the mind of Lazarus Mazingane, a figure convicted of heinous crimes against women in Johannesburg during the 1990s. Conducted within the confines of Leeuwkop Maximum Security Prison, the interview grants exclusive access to Mazingane, who has been incarcerated for over a decade. Director Piet Byleveldt's approach allows for an in-depth exploration of Mazingane's troubled past, as he attempts to rationalize his violent actions. Mazingane himself cites psychological trauma and strained familial relationships, particularly a negative influence from his mother-in-law, as contributing factors to his criminal mindset. The film captures a complex psychological portrait, revealing the contradictions and self-justifications of a convicted individual. Through this raw and often disturbing account, the documentary probes the depths of criminal psychology and reflects on the workings of the justice system, while importantly serving to honor victims and support survivor advocacy.
