Richard Thorpe's 1934 melodrama, "City Park," offers a poignant glimpse into desperation and unexpected salvation. The film centers on the plight of Rose Wentworth (Sally Blane), a young woman driven to extreme measures by poverty, who attempts to secure basic necessities by feigning delinquency. Her path crosses with Colonel Henry Randolph Ransome (Henry B. Walthall), a man of perhaps questionable means but with a heart for the downtrodden. Ransome, along with his two companions, endeavors to aid Rose, even arranging for her former sweetheart to return, only to discover he is a man entangled in criminal activities.
