Cinemavixion Review

John H. Auer's 1937 melodrama, "Circus Girl," offers a surprisingly tense dive into the cutthroat world of the big top. Starring June Travis as the talented trapeze artist Kay Rogers, the film quickly spirals into a narrative of jealousy and attempted murder when Rogers marries Charles Jerome (Donald Cook). Jerome's possessive nature soon fixates on fellow performer Bob McAvoy (Robert Livingston), whom he views as a rival for his wife's attention and affections. The plot skillfully navigates Jerome's increasingly desperate attempts to eliminate McAvoy, culminating in a botched tiger mauling that tragically ensnares another circus performer. Notably, the famed Escalante Family provided doubling for the three leads, adding an authentic layer of acrobatic prowess to the production. Despite its era, "Circus Girl" remains a compelling watch, showcasing the high-stakes drama that can unfold both on and off the trapeze.
