Rowland V. Lee's 1945 swashbuckler, "Captain Kidd," presents a decidedly unhistorical, yet entertaining, take on the infamous pirate. Charles Laughton dons the mantle of Kidd, portraying him as a cunning and ruthless figure who manipulates his way into a royal commission to escort a treasure ship from India. The narrative cleverly weaves in themes of betrayal and hidden agendas as Kidd assembles a crew of dubious characters, including the reappearance of Orange Povey, a woman he once left stranded.
