BURYING THE EX
Cinemavixion Review
Joe Dante, a maestro of genre-bending cinema, returns with "Burying the Ex," a darkly comedic horror romance that plays with the classic trope of the undead ex-lover. The film stars the late Anton Yelchin as Max, a man trapped in a suffocating relationship with the increasingly possessive Evelyn, portrayed with delightful menace by Ashley Greene. Their idyllic, albeit strained, life together is tragically cut short by a freak accident, offering Max a chance at a fresh start with the enigmatic Olivia, played by Alexandra Daddario. However, as is often the case in Dante's whimsical yet unsettling worlds, Max's newfound happiness is short-lived. Evelyn, unable to accept their separation even in death, returns from the grave, determined to rekindle their relationship. What follows is a hilarious and often terrifying battle of wills, as Max desperately tries to navigate his love life while dealing with a flesh-and-blood (or perhaps, decaying-flesh) ex-girlfriend. While "Burying the Ex" may not have garnered widespread critical acclaim, earning a 30% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 5.4/10 on IMDb, it offers a unique blend of humor and horror. Yelchin delivers a performance filled with relatable exasperation, perfectly complemented by Greene's over-the-top, yet captivating, turn as the vengeful spirit. The film, penned by Alan Trezza, is a testament to Dante's enduring ability to craft entertaining narratives that are both spooky and surprisingly sweet, making it a worthwhile watch for fans of quirky horror comedies.
