Cinemavixion Review

In "Bulldog Drummond Comes Back" (1937), director Louis King delivers a brisk adventure that, while perhaps leaning into familiar tropes, offers a thoroughly enjoyable experience. John Howard steps capably into the lead role of the titular Captain Drummond, whose plans for a quiet visit from his fiancée, Phyllis (Louise Campbell), are violently disrupted by the vengeful Irena Soldanis and Mikhail Valdin. Irena's motive, revenge for her brother's execution, fuels a cat-and-mouse game filled with cryptic clues and escalating danger. The narrative, though potentially cliché to some, is elevated by its energetic pacing and a series of surprisingly engaging plot twists. Viewers might find themselves guessing alongside Drummond as he unravels Irena's trail. The supporting cast, including Algy and the ever-faithful butler Tenny, adds to the charm, while Colonel Neilson of Scotland Yard, portrayed with comedic flair through ingenious disguises, provides moments of genuine amusement. Despite the somewhat stereotypical portrayal of the European villains, they serve their purpose as entertaining antagonists. Clocking in at a lean 64 minutes, "Bulldog Drummond Comes Back" is a well-crafted, action-packed mystery that remains a fun, family-friendly diversion without resorting to offensive material.
