BROKEN

Cinemavixion Review

Shaun Robert Smith's 2016 drama, "Broken," presents a harrowing exploration of trauma and caregiving. The film follows Evie, a young woman seeking refuge and a new beginning in England after a difficult past. Her attempt at a fresh start is complicated when she takes on a job caring for a tetraplegic patient, John. The demanding nature of the role, coupled with Evie's unresolved guilt and shame, begins to unearth buried memories and test her moral boundaries. Morjana Alaoui delivers a compelling performance as Evie, navigating the psychological toll of her past and the present pressures of her caregiving duties. The film, co-written by Smith and Craig Conway, delves into the blurred lines of responsibility and the fragility of the human psyche under duress. While "Broken" may not have garnered widespread critical acclaim, its intimate focus on psychological struggle and the complexities of empathy makes it a noteworthy, albeit somber, cinematic experience.
