BROKEN

Cinemavixion Review

Shaun Robert Smith's 2016 drama, "Broken," offers a poignant exploration of trauma and the arduous journey toward healing. Morjana Alaoui delivers a compelling performance as Evie, a young woman seeking refuge and a fresh start in England after a difficult past. The narrative centers on Evie's employment as a carer for John, a tetraplegic man, portrayed with subtle depth by Mel Raido. As Evie grapples with the emotional and physical demands of her role, the film skillfully delves into the psychological toll of her responsibilities, which inevitably dredge up buried memories and unresolved guilt. The lines between professional duty, personal demons, and the desperate instinct for survival become increasingly blurred, creating a palpable tension that permeates the story. "Broken" is a character-driven piece that thrives on its intimate portrayal of psychological struggle. While the film may not shy away from difficult themes, it does so with a nuanced hand, inviting viewers to contemplate the complexities of redemption and the enduring impact of one's past. The supporting performances, including that of Craig Conway, further enrich the film's emotional landscape. Despite its modest reception, "Broken" stands as a thoughtful, albeit somber, examination of the human spirit's resilience in the face of profound adversity.
