BORN TO WIN

Cinemavixion Review

Ivan Passer's 'Born to Win' offers a gritty yet surprisingly hopeful look at redemption, anchored by a compelling performance from George Segal as J.J., a street-smart junkie adrift in a cycle of addiction and petty crime. The film skillfully navigates the bleak realities of J.J.'s existence, juxtaposing his desperate search for a fix with the unexpected possibility of genuine love. Segal embodies J.J.'s weariness and underlying vulnerability with a nuanced portrayal that draws the viewer into his struggle. The narrative, enriched by the supporting performances and a sharp script, explores themes of self-destruction and the potent force of human connection. Despite its darker subject matter, 'Born to Win' ultimately suggests that even in the most challenging circumstances, the desire for a better life can emerge, offering a poignant, if bittersweet, cinematic experience.
