BODY BROKERS

Cinemavixion Review

John Swab's "Body Brokers" plunges into the dark underbelly of the American addiction treatment industry, presenting a gritty and often disturbing narrative. The film, released in 2021, stars Jack Kilmer as Utah, a young man struggling with addiction who is drawn into a predatory business disguised as rehabilitation. Alice Englert, Frank Grillo, and Michael Kenneth Williams round out a compelling cast, each bringing a nuanced performance to this bleak landscape. Swab, who also penned the screenplay, crafts a story that is both a character study and a damning indictment of a system that profits from desperation. The plot follows Utah's journey from the streets to a seemingly benevolent treatment center, only to discover the exploitative reality behind it. The film doesn't shy away from depicting the cyclical nature of addiction and the moral compromises made by those involved. While the film garnered a mixed reception, with an IMDb rating of 6.2/10 and a Rotten Tomatoes score of 58%, its unflinching portrayal of a controversial subject matter makes it a noteworthy, if unsettling, watch. "Body Brokers" serves as a stark reminder of the complex issues surrounding addiction and the often-unseen economic forces at play.
