BOB DYLAN'S JESUS YEARS: THE STORY BEHIND DYLAN'S GOSPEL ALBUMS

Cinemavixion Review

Joel Gilbert's documentary, "Bob Dylan's Jesus Years: The Story Behind Dylan's Gospel Albums," offers a compelling deep dive into a pivotal, yet often misunderstood, era of the iconic musician's career. Originally met with skepticism, Dylan's "Born Again" transformation and subsequent gospel albums are now frequently re-evaluated as significant artistic achievements. This film meticulously reconstructs that period, drawing on interviews with key figures such as Pastor Bill Dwyer, producer Jerry Wexler, and collaborator Regina McCrary. Through a blend of insightful testimony, rare archival footage from 1978-1981, and even a newly discovered interview with Dylan himself, the documentary illuminates the profound impact of his newfound faith on his life and music. Gilbert navigates the controversies and critical reception, showcasing how Dylan's evangelical messages, though alienating to some, became a powerful source of artistic expression, culminating in Grammy success for "Gotta Serve Somebody."
