Albert Pyun's 1997 action thriller, "Blast," delivers a serviceable, albeit predictable, dose of adrenaline centered around a high-stakes hostage situation. Set against the backdrop of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, the film pits a former Olympic athlete, Jack Bryant (Linden Ashby), against a ruthless group of terrorists who have seized an aquatic center and taken the U.S. women's swim team captive. Bryant, now a janitor, finds himself as the unlikely last line of defense, forced to utilize his dormant athletic prowess and resourcefulness to thwart the attackers' deadly plans. The film benefits from a solid, if somewhat underutilized, cast. Ashby convincingly portrays the everyman hero thrust into extraordinary circumstances, while Andrew Divoff brings his signature intensity to the role of the antagonist. Rutger Hauer provides a veteran presence as a former fighter offering guidance, though his role feels somewhat peripheral. The plot, while straightforward, offers moments of tension, particularly as the clock ticks down towards potential disaster. "Blast" may not reinvent the action genre, but for fans of late 90s direct-to-video thrills, it offers a competent execution of a familiar premise. Its straightforward narrative and clear-cut hero-villain dynamic make it an accessible watch for those seeking straightforward, action-packed entertainment.
