D.W. Griffith's 1915 silent epic, "The Birth of a Nation" (originally conceived as "The Clansman"), remains a deeply controversial yet undeniably significant landmark in cinematic history. Chronicling the tumultuous period of the Civil War and its aftermath through the intertwined fates of two families, the Stonemans and the Camerons, the film offers a sweeping, albeit deeply biased, narrative.
