In "Big Freaking Rat," director Thomas J. Churchill unleashes a creature feature that leans into its B-movie premise with a gleeful, albeit sometimes cringe-worthy, abandon. The film centers on Ranger Brody and his family, who find their new campground threatened by an unwelcome, colossal resident born from a nearby toxic waste dump. This mutated rodent, the titular "Big Freaking Rat," quickly turns the idyllic setting into a hunting ground, with campers becoming its next meal. While the plot treads familiar territory for the genre, the film distinguishes itself with a surprisingly decent creature design for its budget, a testament to the passion of its creators for the horror genre. The acting, particularly from genre veteran Felissa Rose, is a highlight, even if some of the dialogue elicits more groans than gasps. "Big Freaking Rat" doesn't shy away from gore and attempts humor through a barrage of rat-related puns and a subplot that veers into gangster comedy spoof.
