BIG ASS SPIDER!

Cinemavixion Review

Prepare for a creature feature that bites back with surprising zest! "Big Ass Spider!" delivers exactly what its title promises, a gloriously B-movie-esque romp through Los Angeles as an alien arachnid grows to colossal proportions. Director Mike Mendez, working with a script that clearly revels in its genre roots, crafts a surprisingly effective blend of genuine tension and tongue-in-cheek humor. Greg Grunberg anchors the film with a likable performance as an exterminator thrust into the unlikely role of hero, ably supported by Lin Shaye and Ruben Pla. While the special effects might lean towards the practical and occasionally cheesy, they serve the film's pulpy charm perfectly. Garnering a commendable 78% on Rotten Tomatoes, this is a film that doesn't take itself too seriously, yet executes its premise with enough skill and heart to be an infectious good time for fans of monster movies.
