John Huston's "Beat the Devil" is a serpentine caper that playfully subverts traditional noir tropes. Humphrey Bogart, in a role that seems to wink at his own tough-guy persona, portrays Billy Dannreuther, a down-on-his-luck American entangled with a motley crew of international schemers in pursuit of African uranium.
