BEAT THE DEVIL

Cinemavixion Review

John Huston's "Beat the Devil" is a deliciously cynical caper that revels in its own convoluted plotting and morally ambiguous characters. Humphrey Bogart, as the charmingly roguish Billy Dannreuther, leads a colorful ensemble cast including Jennifer Jones and Gina Lollobrigida, each vying for fortune in a scheme as murky as the African sands they aspire to conquer. Huston, working from a script co-penned by Truman Capote, crafts a film that is both a parody of film noir and a genuinely thrilling adventure. The dialogue crackles with wit, and the unpredictable narrative keeps the audience guessing. While not a box office smash, its enduring cult status and the masterful direction from Huston solidify "Beat the Devil" as a uniquely entertaining, darkly humorous gem that rewards close attention.
