Monte Hellman's "Beast from Haunted Cave" (1959) is a fascinating early entry into the cult director's filmography, blending a gritty crime narrative with genuine monster horror. The film's premise, which sees a group of gold robbers seeking refuge in a remote ski lodge only to be terrorized by a monstrous entity lurking in nearby caves, is compelling. While the creature effects might be of their time, the tension is palpable, amplified by the claustrophobic setting and the growing paranoia amongst the criminals.
