BAUHAUS SPIRIT

Cinemavixion Review

Niels Bolbrinker's "Bauhaus Spirit" is a compelling documentary that transcends a mere historical overview, delving into the enduring philosophical and practical relevance of the iconic German art school. Released in 2018, the film masterfully connects the radical utopian visions of Walter Gropius and his contemporaries to contemporary challenges in architecture, design, and social living. By drawing parallels between disparate communities—from a Latin American favela to an old workers' settlement in Dessau—the documentary illustrates how the Bauhaus ethos of uniting art, craft, and social consciousness continues to resonate. The film highlights Bauhaus's foundational principles of cross-medial synthesis, order, playfulness, and clarity, demonstrating their influence on everything from Apple's design to sustainable architecture. More than just an artistic experiment, "Bauhaus Spirit" frames the movement as a socio-political statement, a reflection of its era, and a continuous source of inspiration for artists, scientists, and architects today. It poses pertinent questions about our collective future: "How do we want to live, where do we want to go?" The film, which received one nomination and holds a 6.6 rating on IMDb, is an insightful exploration of an unfinished utopian project, making it a must-watch for anyone interested in the intersection of art, design, and societal progress.
