BAN THE SADIST VIDEOS

Cinemavixion Review

David Gregory's "Ban the Sadist Videos!" offers a meticulously researched and compelling dive into Britain's notorious "Video Nasty" moral panic of the early 1980s. This documentary, released in 2005, meticulously unpacks the societal anxieties and media hysteria that surrounded the proliferation of controversial films on home video. Gregory skillfully navigates the legal battles, public outcry, and the often-sensationalized reporting that defined the era. Featuring interviews and archival footage, the film provides crucial historical context, examining the cultural landscape that allowed such a scandal to erupt. It serves as a vital record, not just of censorship debates, but of a specific, charged moment in British cultural history, prompting reflection on the perennial tension between artistic freedom and public morality.
