BALKAN ROYALS | SOUTHEASTERN MONARCHIES

Cinemavixion Review

In "Balkan Royals | Southeastern Monarchies," director Alix François Meier offers a compelling look at the resurgence of royal families in post-communist Eastern Europe. The documentary thoughtfully explores how these once-ostracized dynasties have reclaimed a significant role, serving as both external representatives and internal symbols of stability and national identity. Meier skillfully brings to life the histories of Bulgaria's Simeon Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, Montenegro's Nicholas, Crown Prince of Montenegro, and Romania's Michael I and his daughter Crown Princess Margareta. These figures, representing old royal lines, are presented not just as historical footnotes but as vital links to a nation's past and crucial anchors for its future. The film highlights the unique position of these monarchies, providing a sense of continuity and a tangible connection to heritage in societies navigating a new era.
