BABES IN TOYLAND

Cinemavixion Review

This 1934 musical fantasy, 'Babes in Toyland,' starring the iconic comedic duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, offers a whimsical escape into a world where toy-making and mortgage troubles collide. Directed by Gus Meins, the film sees Laurel's Stannie Dum and Hardy's Ollie Dee attempting to thwart the villainous Barnaby's schemes. Barnaby, driven by greed, seeks to marry Little Bo Peep and seize her mother's property. The hapless heroes' efforts to secure the funds to save Mother Peep's shoe, and by extension Bo Peep herself, lead to a series of comical mishaps. Their plan to trick Barnaby into marrying Stannie Dum instead of Bo Peep only escalates the conflict, culminating in Barnaby unleashing his fearsome Bogeymen upon the unsuspecting Toyland. While perhaps not as universally acclaimed as some of Laurel and Hardy's other works, 'Babes in Toyland' remains a charming example of their unique brand of slapstick and a delightful journey into a fantastical realm.
