AWAKE IN THE WOODS

Cinemavixion Review

Nicholas Boise's 2015 independent feature, "Awake in the Woods," plunges viewers into a chilling narrative steeped in local legend and escalating dread. Set in the ominously quiet woods of Marion, N.Y., the film taps into primal fears, depicting a place where the wilderness itself seems to harbor a malevolent past. Hunters speak of unexplained phenomena, hikers recount terrifying encounters, and the woods' survivors are left irrevocably changed, their sanity shattered. The plot centers on a young girl who, defying parental warnings, ventures into the forbidden territory and subsequently disappears. This tragedy compels three friends to embark on a desperate search, armed only with their determination to uncover the truth. What they find, however, transcends rational explanation, leading to a harrowing ordeal where the line between reality and nightmare blurs. The film's climax leaves one survivor to wander, forever marked by the horrors witnessed within the woods. "Awake in the Woods" is a testament to low-budget filmmaking, relying on atmosphere and suspense to create its unsettling effect. While the IMDb rating of 3.1 suggests a polarizing reception, the film's commitment to its horror premise and its exploration of the unknown make it a compelling watch for fans of found-footage and supernatural thrillers seeking an unnerving experience.
