AUGUSTUS & LIVIA: ANCIENT ROME'S MOST RUTHLESS POWER COUPLE

Cinemavixion Review

This documentary delves into the complex and often brutal ascent of Augustus and the significant influence of his wife, Livia, in shaping the Roman Empire. It masterfully navigates the treacherous political landscape following Caesar's assassination, detailing Octavian's ruthless consolidation of power. The narrative highlights his dual legacy: the end of devastating civil wars and the establishment of an autocratic emperorship under the guise of republican restoration, alongside the ushering in of the Pax Augusta. The film's strength lies in its exploration of the intense power struggle for succession, focusing on the machinations of Julia and Livia, ultimately revealing Livia's triumph and her role in placing her son Tiberius on the imperial throne. It's a compelling examination of ambition, intrigue, and the often bloody realities of ancient Roman politics.
