Archie Mayo's "Angel on My Shoulder" from 1946 offers a compelling, albeit supernatural, morality play anchored by a powerhouse performance from Paul Muni. Muni embodies the notorious gangster Eddie Kagel, whose demise at the hands of a treacherous associate lands him in a hellish predicament. It is here that the Devil himself, played with deliciously sardonic flair by Claude Rains, offers Kagel a Faustian bargain: return to Earth in the body of a judge, a man whose double is being manipulated by the Devil. The premise allows for a fascinating exploration of redemption and free will, as Kagel, inhabiting the judge's persona, finds himself inadvertently performing good deeds and even falling in love with the judge's fiancée, Barbara (Anne Baxter). While the film's fantastical conceit is its primary draw, it is the interplay between Muni's hardened criminal and Rains's suave infernal negotiator that truly elevates the material.
