Archie Mayo's "Angel on My Shoulder" offers a Faustian bargain with a distinctly noir flavor, blending supernatural elements with a gritty tale of redemption. Paul Muni delivers a compelling performance as a slain gangster whose soul is gambled by the Devil (a delightfully menacing Claude Rains) into the body of a judge. The premise, where the gangster's attempts at revenge and self-serving actions inadvertently lead to good deeds, provides a rich ground for exploring themes of fate and free will. Anne Baxter shines as the judge's fiancée, adding a layer of romantic complication that challenges the gangster's cynical worldview.
