AMERICAN PARENT

Cinemavixion Review

Emily Railsback's "American Parent" offers an intimate and unflinching portrayal of modern parenthood set against the backdrop of a global pandemic. The film centers on Bette, a new mother navigating the delicate balance between her burgeoning career in theatre and the joys and challenges of raising her young daughter. Complementing her journey is Elsie, whose academic pursuits as an adjunct theology professor highlight the dual pressures of professional ambition and domestic life. Railsback masterfully captures the everyday chaos and profound emotional shifts inherent in raising a toddler, further intensified by the couple's navigation of professional uncertainties and societal shifts. The performances by Kristi Alsip, Kristen Bush, and Angelicque Cate are deeply felt, grounding the narrative in a relatable and authentic experience. "American Parent" is a poignant exploration of love, resilience, and the evolving definition of family in contemporary America.
